This coin most probably was struck at Cardia, also spelled Kardia, an important city of the Chersonese. Kardia was originally a colony of Miletos. It was destroyed by Lysimachos in 309 B.C.
Minted at Cherronesos, which quite possibly was the same place as the later Kardia, around 400-350 B.C. This was before ALEXANDER III, THE GREAT controlled the area. Minted under the AEGINETIC STANDARD; which received its name from the Maritime state, situated between the coastlines of Attica and Argolis, and in all probability was the earliest mint in European Greece. |
